Deutsche Welle EgyptAir jet broke up in midair after fire The New York Times has cited anonymous Egyptian officials as saying the doomed jetliner disintegrated in the sky. Previous evidence has suggested that a blaze broke out onboard over the Mediterranean. The officials told the US paper on condition of anonymity that it remained unclear whether the fire on board was triggered by mechanical malfunction or a criminal act. But it appeared the blaze - thought to be near or inside the cockpit - was sufficient to cause the Airbus A320 to break up in midair, they said. Some 18 African countries participated in the festival, organised by the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism.
