Home Secretary Theresa May, who will become British prime minister on Wednesday, said she wanted the "best deal" possible on leaving the EU in her first comments since her leadership victory was confirmed on Monday. May said her campaign had been based on pillars including the need "to negotiate the best deal for Britain in leaving the EU and to forge a new role for ourselves in the world". Speaking outside parliament and flanked by dozens of MPs supporting her, May reiterated that she would honour the results of last month's referendum to leave the EU. "Brexit means Brexit — and we're going to make a success of it," May added. Current Prime Minister David Cameron announced he would step down hours after the referendum result came through. May emerged as his replacement after her final rival, Andrea Leadsom, pulled out of the race on Monday. Within hours she was confirmed as the new leader of the governing Conservative Party with immediate effect. Cameron has said he will leave office on Wednesday after his final session of Prime Minister's Questions in parliament.
