Member of health committee of House of Representatives, Ahmed el-Tahawy, described the female genital mutilation (FGM) operation as an Islamic "Sunna" that we should follow, al-Bawaba News reported Tuesday. "Leaving the female uncircumcised causes sexual arousal to her, in addition to the health problems. That's a scientific fact nobody can deny," el-Tahawy said in an interview with Dream TV channel earlier Tuesday, calling on doctors to follow Prophet Muhammad and perform the FGM. Although FGM is criminalised by law in Egypt, many doctors violate their syndicate's instructions and perform it. The growing number of deaths of girls during the operation prompted NGOs and human rights organizations to call on the government to toughen the punishment against violating doctors.
