The Arab woman ... a pending issue
Published in Albawaba on 08 - 03 - 2016

After skipping the cusp of the 21st century, the Arab communities, especially the Egyptian one, still have controversial issues. The most important and effective issue is the position of woman in the society, as it is thoroughly intertwined with the other issues. This controversial issue is related to the community's progress and culture.
The vision despising women has many reasons; including what is culturally rooted and others are novelty. Both of them should be dealt if we aspire to reach a healthy society, as the first stage of treatment is to determine the disease reason.
1- Breeding
Discrimination between the girls and boys during the early stages of their education strongly supports the ideas despising the women and their value. This discriminatory approach, imposing specific rules on only girls on gender basis, puts the woman in the frame of a tool for sexual pleasure not a valued human regardless of his gender. It turns her to just a body for harassment, if not actually, it would be verbally, mentally or even by look.
However, the boys have not been taught that the harassment is violation against the feelings and the body of another human who should not be violated by any other one. It also turns the men into just a male without any other values.
2- Religious speech
The religious speech, whether Muslim or Christian, deals with the woman as the devil's assistant and the major reason for Adam's exit from the paradise. It always focuses on specific models like Potiphar's wife and Mary Magdalene to promote her as a source of seduction.
Such ideas, promoted to the children, pose serious challenge to the creation of sober generations. Is it expected for the men to respect the women in the light of these ideas? No! even the women will not respect themselves. The religious speech related to the women should be reviewed and amended.
3- Art and cinema
Cinema in our communities promoted the worst image of the woman. It provided her as tool of sexual pleasure, while it has not discussed the women's problems. It offered her as a mean for excitement in a clear violation to her humanity. It offered her as a body not mind and spirit.
Even when it offered models of successful women, it turned her body into the way to achieve success. This image contributed to the increase of the harassment cases in the society, as it wrongly promoted that the women like such violations.
4- Heritage
Even the heritage is not merciful with the woman unless she is a mother. The motherhood is the only thing protecting the woman from the eternal torment since her unfortunate birth until death. The popular proverbs have not supported the girls. Even the mothers lack the honor unless they give birth to boys. The girls may be prevented from taking her inheritance not to allow the family's wealth transfer to another family. She is not dealt as a human, as the humanity is limited to the males only, according to their view point.
5- Demographic state
When the human grows in a crowded environment, he loses the feeling of his body's value. This feeling extends to the others' bodies. When the child suffers from congestion inside the class in the school and in transportation during his young adulthood, how can he respect the others' bodies, while his humanity is violated.
6- The law
The law, according to the constitution, should not discriminate between the citizens on any basis, while, in fact, the constitution is almost violated during drafting the laws related to equality. For example, if the woman killed her husband for committing Marital Infidelity, she would be sentenced to death or at least life imprisonment. However, the matter is different for husbands.
In case of committing adultery, the woman is always punished, while the men are always released on bail. Such shameful laws strengthen the inequality and put the woman in lower degree in humanity. The only justification for the different violations is that he is a male.
The great disaster is the absence of expression "harassment" in the Egyptian law that ignores the psychological of harassment, while focuses on the physical harm.
7- Politicians
The politicians do not recognize the woman except as numbers in the poll stations. When they attempted to empower the woman, they turned to the quota system which violates the women's right of political participation. The same problem is clearly witnessed in the political parties, as the woman representation is very low whether in numbers or positions.
Regarding the organizations interested in the women's rights, they are the worst in dealing with the women position. These organizations turned to use the women issues to achieve personal or financial gains, while they have not served the interests of women.
8- The Women
I cannot pardon the woman herself from the responsibility of her current position. She sponsors the shameful culture and performs a major role in supporting it in the mentality of her sons and daughters since their childhood. The mother insists to force her daughter to serve her brother just because she is the girl. He is better and more useful than her. He has the right to take all the opportunities because of his gender, while she has not the right to be ambitious, as her role is limited to marriage and serving her husband and children.
9- Economy
All previous reasons mix in the crucible of the economy that violates the humanity and lives of the people. The people of Egypt have no rights. They are deprived from love, work, and even marriage.
All these reasons paved the way for dealing with women in despising way supporting the culture of continuous sexual hunger. Unfortunately, we still discuss the woman's position in the Egyptian community in the 21st century.
