Italy opposes unilateral military intervention in the fight against terrorists in Libya, unless the national unity government being formed has officially demanded it, the special representative of the Italian government in Libya said. "Italy opposes unilateral military intervention in Libya," Ambassador Giorgio Starace said during an interview with the Anadolu Agency. Starace stressed that achieving security and stability in Libya is a goal shared by Italy and the international community. "Despite the fact that the agenda of the world community in recent times are the issues related to the situation in Syria, the presence of the terrorist organisation Daesh in Libya is a major concern for Italy, which is located in relative proximity to the coast of Libya," he said, using another acronym for Daesh. "Our main and primary objective is the creation of a national unity government in Libya. To assist that country in combating terrorism, particularly the Islamic State, it is necessary that the government of Libya officially requests this. We oppose unilateral initiatives in Libya," he said. Starace added that Italy shares mutual understanding with the international community in this regard including Turkey, the US and Qatar.
