Jihadism is generational revolt and nihilistic: Olivier Roy
Published in Albawaba on 01 - 12 - 2015

France is at war! Perhaps. But against whom or against what? ISIS does not send Syrians who carry out attacks in France to dissuade the French government to bomb. ISIS draws from a reservoir of radicalized young French that whatever happens in the Middle East, are already disaffected and seek a cause, a label, a great story to affix the bloody signature personal revolt. The crushing of ISIS will not change this revolt, Le Monde Reported.
The rallying of these young people in ISIS is the opportunistic: yesterday they were with al-Qaeda, before yesterday (1995) they were subcontractors of the Algerian GIA, from Bosnia to Afghanistan through Chechnya, their little nomadic individual jihad (like the "Roubaix gang"). And tomorrow they will fight with a different party, unless the death in action, age or disillusionment will empty their ranks as was the case of the ultra-left 1970s.
There is no third, fourth or subsequent generation of jihadists. Since 1996, we face a very stable phenomenon: the radicalization of young French to two categories, "second generation" of converted Muslims and "strain".
The main problem for France is not the Caliphate of the Syrian desert, which eventually will evaporate like a mirage that became old nightmare, the problem is the revolt of the young. And the real question is: how to get them back?
