EU in a statement said that only a political track, that involves all parties, can ensure a stable solution to the conflict in Syria and to this end a joint effort of all the relevant regional and international actors is required. Senior Iranian and European Union (EU) officials have met in Brussels to discuss the latest developments in the Middle East, especially the crisis in Syria. Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian met with EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini for three hours on Tuesday in Brussels, which hosts the EU headquarters, an EU statement said. 'There was an agreement that only a political track, that involves all parties, can ensure a stable solution to the conflict in Syria and to this end a joint effort of all the relevant regional and international actors is required,' the statement added. Amir-Abdollahian and Mogherini also highlighted the 'dire humanitarian situation' in Syria where more than 250,000 people have been killed in the foreign-sponsored conflict which started in March 2011. Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has proposed a four-point peace plan on the Syrian crisis. The initiative calls for a national unity government, a ceasefire, fighting terrorism and constitutional reforms in the violence-torn Arab nation, according to Zarif himself. The Syrian army has been engaged in heavy battles against the extremist militants on many fronts across the country over the past four years. Iran has on numerous occasions insisted that the Syrian crisis can only have a peaceful solution.
