Facing intolerance and extremism
Published in Albawaba on 17 - 11 - 2015

The Phenomena of extremism and forcefulness are human Phenomena that exist in all societies, extremism for thought or belief or opinion is considered as disease witnessed by various societies, and led in many cases to wars, confrontations, acts of mass murder and genocide, was behind cosmic wars.
There are different sectors of militant groups or extremists in human societies that are produced from self-conviction concept of superiority that it is inherited due to factors of language, race, religion and belief, and usually in this case regime and state bodies target to resist these phenomena, siege them and reduce of their destructive work.
The greater the number of supporters of extremist and racist ideas, risk factor rises and racial hatred crimes rates enlarge, and the danger increases if spreading of these ideas is accompanied by economic or social crisis, in this case the search will target the different.
When extremism and racism base is expanded, usually it results in regime that expresses these ideas and works to mobilize and organize them, which is what Hitler has made, who invested the reality of Germany defeat in World War I and the humiliation suffered by Berlin from the Treaty of Versailles, which imposed paying huge compensation to victorious states, on top of which France, Hitler started World War II, which took with it the lives of about fifty million people, and ended with the occupation of Germany and severe destruction in all parts of Europe.
Gradually, the world began to feel the seriousness of racism and feelings of extremism and intolerance carried with it, that is why the world made human rights conventions, and worked on criminalization of racist ideas, and began working on formulation of legal system to criminalize acts of mass murder on racial or ideological background.
Ideas to restrict the sovereignty of the State were imposed to end committing acts of murder and genocide, and evolution peaked by creating permanent war crimes tribunal in Rome in 1998, so it can view war crimes and crimes against humanity, without taking into accounts the families or major powers, because before decision by the Security Council was requires to formation of Court to look into these crimes.
Racism has three components: the first is Perceptive component, which is represented in beliefs and ideas that exist among individuals different from other individuals, members of a particular group, which represent stereotypes, which means perceptions of mind characterized by severe sclerosis, people who belong to this group are based on a set of distinctive characteristics. It is noted that race, religion and national groups, which constitute the most prominent categories because they are more obvious social differences and the most resistant to change.
The second is the emotional component, it serves as a empathetic lining that covers the cognitive component, and if the trend misses emotional intolerance it becomes hard to describe.
The third is behavioral component, it holds individual feelings and stereotypes, and it is divided in five grades:
1- Refraining from verbal expression outside framework of the group, to reflect the underlying behavior of hatred.
2- Retreating from dealing with other group or groups.
3- Discrimination: marks the beginning of effective forms of intolerance, to prevent members of other groups to get the benefits or facilities or whether the gains.
4- Physical attack: any physical assault on members of other group or groups.
5- Extermination: final stage of enmity and hatred that embodies the top of racist act, and expresses itself in the form of genocide on the basis of division or discrimination.
According to this perception, racism has degrees and expressing them has different forms, there is Racism on the intellectual level in all societies... According to this vision, absence of physical attacks or acts of murder does not mean society does not have racism, but it is hidden on the level of thought racism, captive of internal conversations, awaiting the opportunity to get out and could reach to genocide.
It is very important to face racism on intellectual level because hidden racism is usually revealed when facing another form of racism. It is difficult mission that requires intellectual conviction for human values, and in the forefront of them equality, freedom, and acceptance of diversity and difference.
The confrontation starts in early age from child raising tools jointly by the state and family, facing terrorism in this state stops it from growing to other stages of emotionally and behaviorally, confrontation on intellectual level only requires intellectual activity, the state can use its potentials to spread human and thoughtful ways of thinking, that consists with the fundamental human rights covenants, common sense and psychological balance.
Leaving racism and discriminatory ideas evolve and enter the stage of "emotion" makes confrontation extremely difficult, it is essential to remove racist thoughts that reject values of citizenship and equality, leaving the situation reaching behavior stage (with its five stages that vary between retreating from expression outside the group and committing massacres) that means that the danger augmented and requires complex treatment that includes security side in addition to enlightening and cultural solutions through planting citizenship and equality values or all values relevant to noble humanitarian thinking.
