Saudi Foreign Minister Adel Al Jubeir announced Friday a five-day ceasefire in Yemen's war beginning from May 12 to facilitate humanitarian aid to civilians in need. Al Jubeir said he hoped Iran-backed Houthi rebels will halt attacks on the ground. "The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Arab alliance in defense of legitimacy in Yemen and all countries that support it, will create specific areas inside Yemen to deliver humanitarian supplies, where all aerial operations will stop at specific times to allow these supplies in, as stipulated by U.N. Security Council resolution 2216," Jubeir said. The resolution imposes an arms embargo on the Houthis and on their allies - army units loyal to former President Ali Abdullah Saleh - and demands they disarm and leave captured cities, including the capital Sanaa that they seized in September. Yemeni population has been trapped in a confrontation between Iran-backed Houthi rebels and military troops loyal to Yemeni President Abd Rabbo Mansour Hadi, who is believed to be outside the country.
