Over 30,000 people are being displaced per day within their countries or fleeing the conflict-torn regions, an overview conducted by the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC) revealed on Wednesday. "These are the worst figures for forced displacement in a generation, signaling our complete failure to protect innocent civilians," the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) Secretary General, Jan Egeland said. The overview was launched at the United Nations in Geneva with internal displacement figures reaching a record high for the third year in a row, the report included how 11 million people were newly displaced by violent events in 2014 alone. "Thirty-eight million human beings are suffering - often in horrendous conditions where they have no hope and no future — and unless we challenge ourselves to change our approach, the shockwaves of these conflicts will continue to haunt us for decades to come," Egeland added. On top of the list for countries with the highest displacement rates comes Syria, with 7.6 Million people displaced within the country, followed by Iraq, South Sudan, Congo and Nigeria. Ukraine startlingly made it to the report for the first time with 646.500 people displaced in 2014 alone, on heels of conflicts between Kiev and Russia loyalists. The Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC), established in 1998, is the leading source of information and analysis on internal displacement. The IDMC's unique global function has been reiterated in annual UN General Assembly resolutions.
