An Egyptian court sentenced to death Saturday the Muslim Brotherhood Supreme Guide Mohamed Badei and 13 co-defendants for torture and murder crimes, according to judicial sources. The Giza Criminal Court delivered life in prison sentences, some in absentia, for 36 other MB affiliates accused of the same crimes. Badei, a Veterinary medicine professor, and co-defendants were found guilty of torturing and killing civilians in a secret room during the Aug. 2013 Rab'a sit-in, a case known in the media as the 'Raba'a Operation Room', the sources added. The Operation Room was designed to spread chaos across the nation, the sources told Al Bawaba News. Pro-MB supporters held the Raba'a and Al Nahda sit-ins after the ouster of former president Mohamed Morsi, July 2013, amid military-backed mass street protests. The sit-ins were dispersed on Aug. 14, 2013. Mohamed Badei, 72, has headed the Egyptian branch of the international MB organization since 2010, an organization designated as terrorist under Egyptian law.
