Hamas leader, Ismail Haniyeh, denied that the movement had any intentions of establishing an independent state in Gaza, Anadolu news agency reported Monday. "Hamas seeks to support the people in Gaza, end the siege and reconstruct the Strip after the latest Israeli war," Haniyeh said Monday during his speech in the Palestinian Land Day 39th anniversary, affirming that the movement worked at ending the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories. Haniyeh called on the Palestinian Authority (PA) live up to its responsibility and embrace all Palestinians, without exception or discrimination. During his speech in the 26th Arab Summit last Saturday, PA President Mahmoud Abbas warned Hamas from attempting to establish a Palestinian state in Gaza, after a potential long-term truce with Israel. Hamas and Fatah had signed a reconciliation agreement on April 23, 2014, to establish a consensus government for 6 months, followed by parliamentary and presidential elections, but the agreement was never activated, among recriminations of intransigence on both sides.
