The Iraqi town of Gurma has been the scene of intense fighting recently. Now the Iraqi army, supported by the anti-Islamic State group coalition, is attempting to take back the area, and this includes finding and destroying bombs. On a typical day, the Iraqi army can come across more than 100 makeshift bombs, or Improvised Explosive Devices (IED), made from everyday materials like cans and metal plates. Thousands of IEDs have been planted across the region by retreating Islamic State militants, and represent a deadly threat to the Iraqi forces and anti-Islamic State militias tracking them.
