An Egyptian military officer was killed early Wednesday, after being shot by unidentified gunmen in Rafah, north Sinai, according to reports. Security sources confirmed that 26 year old Captain, Ayman Fouad was shot in the head during his service hours at Al Barahma checkpoint. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack. Security authorities closed Monday the Rafah border crossing on the borders with Gaza until further notice, after being open for two days to allow stranded Palestinians to cross into Egypt. North Sinai has been witnessing a rising insurgency throughout the past two years, following the ouster of President Mohamed Morsi July 2013, as Islamist militants carried out several attacks against military and police personnel and checkpoints.
