Special envoy for the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR), Actress Angelina Jolie announced Sunday that Iraqi Kurds are in dire need of humanitarian aid, criticizing the international community for its lack of commitment towards them. She stressed on the urgent need to fund humanitarian aid to assist more than three million Iraqi and Syrian refugees living in extreme conditions. Upon visiting Iraq for the fifth time, Jolie added that the lack of action represented in funding humanitarian aid this year to assist refugees as a result of conflicts in Syria and Iraq has led to a humanitarian emergency that might transform into a disaster, if the international community remained silent. The UNHCR announced that it got merely 53% of the $337 million needed to fund humanitarian aid to Iraqi and Syrian refugees in 2014. More than 3.8 million Syrians have left their homes seeking refuge in Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq and Egypt, according to the UNHCR.
