Families of at least 13 fishermen who died in the collision between their fishing boat and a container ship last Sunday in the Red Sea, are calling to take actions against concerned authorities for negligence. Family members claimed that the boat sank at midnight while rescue efforts didn't start before 10 am on the same day. The ongoing search and rescue mission succeeded in saving 13 fishermen, the rest of the 40 crew members of the devastated boat are still missing. Military spokesperson Brigadier General Mohamed Samir said Monday that the sunken boat did not have any emergency communication systems and did not send any distress signal, which delayed rescue efforts. Rescue units were deployed including plane and four ships after receiving a phone call from one fisherman but the reported location was inaccurate. Security forces have detained in Safaga port the merchant ship suspected of causing the collision for investigation while South Sinai prosecutors ordered today the detention of the ship's captain and his assistant, both Egyptians. The Ministry of Social Solidarity doubled on Monday the initial 5.000 EGP compensation for the families of each deceased to 10.000 EGP and 2.000 EGP for the injured instead of 1.000.
