The United States weighed the Israeli threats of military action against Iran to defend its national security, and the potential benefits of US-Iran deal. During the five rounds of talks, the US favoured the benefits of the latter. Hence, the decision was taken in Geneva, during the recent meeting between the US Secretary of State and Iranian Foreign Minister. Catherine Ashton, the European Union's high representative for foreign affairs, played a key role in the talks that led to the current deal. The US-Iran negotiations went beyond the nuclear program and easing of the economic sanctions on Iran. The decisive factor in these negotiations was the agreement that Iran should take part in fighting terrorism in Syria, Iraq, Lebanon and Afghanistan.
