THE 34th CAIRO International Film Festival (30 November-9 December), writes Sarah Mourad, will feature 14 films in the official competition representing, among many countries, Argentina, the Philippines and Hungary. The programme includes the Egyptian director Khaled El-Hagar's Desire and the Italian film The Father and the Foreigner featuring the Egyptian actor Amr Waked. Headed by the Mexican filmmaker Arturo Ripstein, the 13-member jury includes Indian actor Irfan Khan, South Korean actress Jung Hee and, from Egypt, Ali Badrakhan and Mohammad Hefzy. Among the highlights are some high-profile appearances including the presence of the British actress . The youngest actor ever to receive six Academy Award nominations (and receive an Oscar for The Reader in 2009), Winslet started her career in 1991, debuting with Heavenly Creatures in 1994 and making a huge impression with her role in the 1997 Titanic. Other stars who should be appearing include Richard Gear and Juliette Binoche.
