Itinerary of the month: Trek and dive
Published in Al-Ahram Weekly on 24 - 02 - 2005

One of the most exciting itineraries on offer in Sinai, this plan combines desert and diving safaris into a single 10-day programme. It involves mountain-hiking minibus and camelback as well as the ubiquitous four-wheel drive; starting and ending in Cairo, it also makes room for the attractions of the city. Travellers visit Nuweiba, Saint Catherine, Ras Mohamed and Tiran Island in Sharm El-Sheikh, and are constantly escorted by experienced tour guides and diving instructors. Four nights are spent in hotels on a half-board basis (breakfast and dinner), while five nights are spent camping out full board.
Day 1: Arrive in Cairo.
Day 2: Arrive in Nuweiba, where travellers enjoy an introductory dive in the crystal waters of the Red Sea before heading off road into the heart of Sinai for a short trek through the Coloured Canyon.
Day 3: At 1am travellers set off on a hike up Mount Sinai, to enjoy a spectacular sunrise on the summit where the Prophet Moses received the Ten Commandments. On the way back, they visit the Monastery of Saint Catherine, exploring the many and various treasures it houses.
Day 4: Travellers head to the turquoise water of Abu Galum National Park for two dives before enjoying a Bedouin night of food entertainment.
Day 5: Travellers trek to Dahab on camelback. On arrival they enjoy two dives.
Day 6: The safari goes on south to Ras Mohamed National Park, where another two dives await travellers.
Day 7: Travellers reach the Tiran Island reefs by boat for three dives.
Day 8: Travellers reach the WW II Thistlegorm shipwreck by boat for another three dives.
Days 9 and 10: Back in Cairo, traveller's tour some of the world's most exciting attractions.
