EGYPT won a silver in the pair sweep lightweight in the Rowing World Cup in Eton in the UK. Ahmed Said and Hossam Eddin finished second out of 14 boats in the championship played late last month. Fifth place in the pair sweep open, out of 25 boats, went to the Egyptian duo of Mohamed Bakri and Mohamed Gomaa. Egypt will participate in the second round of the World Cup to be played in Munich. The third and final World Cup round takes place in Lucerne, Switzerland. Points won in the World Cup, plus points collected in the World Championship -- scheduled for Japan in August -- are added up to decide the eventual winner. Egypt is currently ranked a respectable seventh in the world in rowing. In related news, Egypt collected nine gold medals out of 12 events in senior and junior events, both men and women, in the Arab Rowing Championship held in Alexandria last month. Egypt played along with Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Kuwait, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq and Sudan. The United Arab Emirates and Qatar participated with referees. Among the gold medal winners was , 17, in the double scull with partner Amr Sayed, and Magdi Ramadan, also a junior, in the single scull. On the sidelines of the tournament, Khaled Zein of Egypt won a third term as chairman of the Arab Rowing Federation. Zein is chairman of the African Rowing Federation as well.
