By Naguib Mahfouz I was shocked and appalled by what happened in Sharm El-Sheikh. Who would do such a thing? You didn't just attack a tourist resort; you broke the heart of an entire nation. Tourism means the world for ordinary people in this country. Now tourism analysts expect things to go back to normal in three years or so. Three long years. This is an unimaginable disaster, that's all I can say. What hurts even more is that the criminals who committed this atrocity cite Iraq and Palestine as reasons. And what about the innocent victims? What about a nation now in grief and shock, a nation that did nothing but support its brethren in Iraq and Palestine? What I find even more galling is that hideous crimes are being committed in the name of Islam. What Islam are you talking about, and what Muslims are you? How can you defend Islam by killing Egyptians of all creeds and walks of life? How can you defend Islam by ruining people's livelihoods and shattering innocent lives? Based on an interview by Mohamed Salmawy.
