Three out of four Egyptian clubs qualified for the group stages of their respective African football club tournaments. Abeer Anwar reports on the winners and one loser
Ahli and Ismaili qualified for the mini-league stage of the Orange CAF Champions league.
Shehab Ahmed scored from a thunderous volley in the 94th minute to give Ahli a 3-2 fairytale win against Ittihad of Libya who had blanked the Egyptian champions 2-0 at home a fortnight ago.
In Cairo Stadium on Sunday, the first half ended goalless after all of Ahli's attempts to score were fruitless. It was not Emad Metab scored Ahli's first goal on the 59th minute that Ahli fans relaxed a bit. Teammate Mohamed Fadl headed the tying goal in the 74th minute. Just when it appeared the teams were headed for an ultimate penalty showdown, teenager Shehab Ahmed charged from the backfield to unleash a pile driver from 35 metres out to make Ahli the winners 3-2 on aggregate.
"It's the best goal of my life," said Shehab, a rookie. "It was also an unforgettable one as it made my team the winner. It was a decisive one. I'm so happy to have been able to score the winner."
"This was the most difficult match in my life," Ahli's first-year coach Hossam El-Badri said. "It was a very crucial game and everybody was pinning their hopes on Ahli.
The Egyptian president's son, Alaa Mubarak, attended the match and afterwards congratulated the players.
Egyptian giants Ahli thus confirmed their place amongst the elites of African football, qualifying for the mini-league stage of the Orange CAF Champions League alongside compatriots Ismaili, JSK Kabylie (Algeria), Heartland FC (Nigeria), TP Mazembe (DR Congo), Esperance (Tunisia), Entente Setif (Algeria) and Heartland (NGR).
Cafonline adds: former winners Ismaili completed a double over Sudanese giants Al-Hilal with a 3-0 victory to cruise on 4-1 on aggregate.
The Egyptians came from behind after Edward Sadomba had shot the visitors into the lead on 27 minutes. Mohamed Homos, Ahmed Farag and Ahmed Khairi then added three without reply.
Holders TP Mazembe kept their defence aspirations on track with a 3-0 win over Malian side Djoliba AC thanks to a brace from Alain Kaluyitkua Dioko and the other from captain Tresor Mputu Mabi.
Elsewhere in Luanda, Angolan champions Petro Atletico managed a 2-1 win over JS Kabylie but the latter progressed 3-2 on aggregate. David Malgalhaes and petit winger Ricardo Job scored for the hosts while Mohamed Aoudia grabbed a crucial away goal for the Canaries.
Algerian champions Entente Setif maintained an impressive run, managing a 2-2 draw in Lusaka against Zanaco of Zambia.
Entente Setif were cruising to victory after goals by Nabil Hemani and Lazhar Aissa had neutralised Makundika Sakala's opener, before Kennedy Nketani levelled for the Zambians five minutes from time.
Zimbabwean torchbearers Dynamos cut short the campaign of debutants Gaborone United of Botswana, managing a barren draw in Gaborone to advance 4-1 on aggregate.
In Omdurman, Tunisian giants Espérance pulled a surprise 1-1 draw against Al-Merrikh to march on 4-1 on aggregate. An own goal by Conolese-import Janvier Bokungu gave the Sudanese giants the lead at half time but Wjadi Boauzzi drew parity seven minutes from recess.
