RAMADAN musalsalat, a quasi-unique genre of television soaps aired during the holy month, are a subject of much speculation, writes Hanan Sabra. With less than a week to go before Ramadan, decisions as to which serials will be selected for screening are ongoing. This year the selection process seems especially difficult: for the first time, it was decided that actresses will not appear in so-called immodest attire. Dancing or drinking scenes will be also be cut, Minister of Information, Anas El-Fiqi, told Al-Ahram Weekly. El-Fiqi also told the Egyptian Radio and Television Union that commercials are to abide by the same criteria. To date, only one serial Ahlam 'Adiyya (Ordinary Dreams) went through the screening process and was approved by the censors. In the soap, film star Yosra plays several roles. Ahlam will be aired on Egyptian TV and on several Arab satellite channels.
