THIS week saw remarkable victories in two individual sports, swimming and judo. In swimming, Egypt's Farida Osman continued her extraordinary assault on the country's record books after she claimed a gold and a bronze medal at the TYR Pro Swim competition in the US. Osman took the gold in the 50m butterfly, clocking 25.79 seconds. It was the second fastest time in the event this year after Olympic champion Sarah Seyostiom set a new record of 25.72 seconds last month. The following day, the 22-year-old Osman won the bronze medal in the 100m butterfly, clocking 59.13 seconds. Teammate Ali Khalafallah also took home a bronze medal in the 50m freestyle in the same tournament, clocking 22.33 seconds. In judo, African champion Mohamed Abdel-Mawgoud won the silver medal in the -66kg weight category of the IJF World Judo Tour which took place in Marrakech, Morocco. Abdel-Mawgoud lost the final and the gold medal to Uzbekistan's Sardor Nurillaev. But the Egyptian had had an impressive run to the final in the tournament that had 440 judokas -- 258 men and 182 women, representing 67 countries from five continents. Abdel-Mawgoud had topped his Pool D, beating Algeria's Wal Ezzine, Turkey's Sinan Sandal and Germany's Sebastian Seidl to qualify for the semi-finals where he defeated Kazakhstan's Yerlan Serikzhanov before losing the final to eventual winner Nurillaev.
