By winning both the women's and men's gold medals, Haidi Adel and Sherif Nazir have reserved the African quota seats for the Olympic Games in the summer of 2020 in Tokyo. The one-day Olympic qualifying African Modern Pentathlon Championship was held in Cairo at the Platinium Club and was organised by the Egyptian Modern Pentathlon Federation. Adel clinched the gold medal after collecting 1,283 points. She was followed by South Africa's Elida Van Dir who claimed the silver medal with 1,257 points, while Egypt's Amira Qandil took the bronze medal with 1,218 points. The men's competition was entirely dominated by the Egyptians. Nazir claimed the gold with a total of 1,411 points, followed by Mohannad Tarek with 1,371 points and the silver medal. Egypt still has a chance to claim two more tickets for the Olympic Games from the World Cup series which will kick off next week, when the first edition takes place in Cairo, also at the Platinium Club from 27 February to 3 March. After the conclusion of all five editions in June, the qualifiers will be named. Each country has a maximum of four players who can take part in the Olympic Games. The World Cup series consists of four events, culminating with a fifth in a World Cup final. Throughout the series which starts in February and concludes in June, Modern Pentathletes collect points in every edition. The World Cup points qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. So, after Cairo, World Cup II will be held in Sofia, Bulgaria, from 10 to 14 April. The third will take place in Szekesfehervar, Hungary, from 2 to 6 May while the fourth will be held in Klaudie, the Czech Republic, from 21 to 26 May. The final of the series is to be held in Tokyo from 27 to 30 June. According to President of the Egyptian Modern Pentathlon Federation Sherif Al-Erian, so far 30 nations have confirmed their participation in the five-day inaugural event of World Cup I with a total of 151 athletes -- 81 male and 70 women, in addition to 93 coaches and officials.
