The Professional Footballers' Association Player of the Year award for 2017-18 goes to Egypt's pride and superstar Mohamed Salah. The down to earth Mo Salah was chosen as the best player in the league this season by his fellow league players, which makes the award even more meaningful and significant according to Salah himself. To be chosen as the best player in the league by the players you play against week in week out simply shows how good Salah has performed and still performing this season. His stats are nothing short of scary but his overall contribution to the team in the league and the Champions League shows he's a player who's ready to shine against any team anywhere in the world.
Just over a month ago, most fans and pundits thought Kevin De Bruyne of Manchester City sealed it and would surely be crowned player of the season come 22 April. However, Salah had other ideas and went on to have a cracking month where he picked up his third player of the month award this season to be the first player ever to win it three times in the same season. At that moment, it was clear that Salah suddenly became firm favourite to win the PFA award. Belgium international De Bruyne finished second and Harry Kane of Tottenham third. And, even though officials did not mention how many votes each player received, rumours indicate that Salah won comfortably which again shows how good he has performed during the course of the season.
Salah
Turning to his stats, Salah has already notched 41 goals and 13 assists in just 42 starts and four substitute appearances. He still as three games to go in the league and at least two Champions League games if Liverpool fail to reach the final. If we say his stats are frightening, this would certainly be an understatement. And it's so easy to convince anyone how astonishing the stats are when we say that only three players across all the European leagues scored 40+ goals this season so far — Cristiano Ronaldo with 42 goals followed by Salah with 41 and Lionel Messi 40. Salah is thus in the same bracket with arguably the best two players to ever play the game. Yes, you read it right, so grasp it and feel happy and proud you lived in the same era of at least the best player in the history of Egyptian football.
And it's even more terrifying when you think that Salah, who already won the African Player of the Year award earlier in the year could still have a better season if Liverpool and Egypt manage to do the not doable. If Salah manages to guide Liverpool to the Champions League title this year and Egypt get through to the group stages in the World Cup, Salah will surely be present in the next Ballon d'Or ceremony, for the best player on the planet, come the end of 2018.
When Salah signed for Liverpool at the start of the season, people would have said we're crazy to think he would be competing for best player in the world at the end of the year but this is just what every single football fan or pundit is talking about at the moment after the astounding season Salah had. The young boy coming from a small team in Egypt called Arab Contactors six years ago is certainly one of the best players in the world right now and is definitely on track to compete with the very best in the world.
Let's hope Salah, 25, will get one over his former teammates when Liverpool take on Roma of Italy over the two legs of the semi-final of the Champions League and hopefully goes all the way to become the first Egyptian to win arguably the biggest individual prize in the football world.
