Mo has an African goal
Published in Al-Ahram Weekly on 05 - 04 - 2018

The one thing we know for sure at the moment is that Mohamed Salah is simply unstoppable. Our Egyptian king notched yet another crucial goal this week as his 85th minute strike won the game for Liverpool against Crystal Palace after Sadio Mane equalised early in the second half. The Premier League's top scorer had a quiet game by his own high standards but once again Salah showed up when it mattered as he popped up with a late winner to send the away fans crazy in the stands.
The win meant Liverpool stayed in pole position to finish in the top four once again to ensure Champions League football next season for Jurgen Klopp and his men. However, the main talking point after the game wasn't the three points as the English media focused more on Salah equalling the record of one of the best strikers to play in the English league.
Salah has now scored 29 league goals in the English topflight this season, a feat achieved by only one African player, former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba. The Ivorian is widely considered one of the best strikers in the history of English football, which made Salah's record look even more impressive given that Salah is not even a striker and given that this is his first season with Liverpool.
The next step is easy for Salah as he needs just one goal in the remaining six games to break Drogba's record and become the highest scoring African player in England in one season. Drogba achieved the feat in 2009-10 when Chelsea won the English topflight diadem plus the FA Cup and Community Shield.
That season, the Ivorian scored 37 goals in 44 games. Salah is now on 37 goals for the whole season so he's also set to better Drogba for the total goals scored in the season, not just the league.
It's also worth mentioning that Salah equalled another record held by Robin van Persie and Cristiano Ronaldo, by scoring in 21 games of the Premier League season, only the third person since 1992 to do so.
Salah's goal meant even more for the player himself, as he's now five goals clear of Harry Kane of Tottenham in the race for top scorer of the league this season. Moreover, Salah is certainly in no mood to stop scoring at the moment as he aims to do the undoable and beat Kane to the award the Englishman won easily in the last two seasons. Salah will probably lose out to Kevin De Bruyne in the race for best player in the league this season given that the Belgian superstar guided his team to the league title in style. However, Salah is certainly now the favourite to be crowned top scorer of the league which is even more impressive given the wealth of magnificent strikers in the Premiership.
The next stop for Salah is Liverpool vs Manchester City in the Champions League. The British sports media is talking about nothing but this encounter as they are the only remaining teams in the Champions League from the Premier League after Manchester United and Tottenham bowed out in the last round.
Let's hope Salah will continue his amazing goal scoring record against the top English teams and find the back of the net or help his side progress to the semi-finals at the expense of Pep Guardiola's men.
