Two rare days
Published in Al-Ahram Weekly on 31 - 01 - 2018

While we are used to seeing Mohamed Salah star week in, week out for Liverpool while the rest of our Egyptian players abroad either do not see action or are struggling, this week was a bit different. Starting with the main man Salah, Liverpool's goal machine had a bad day at the office as his team suffered a shock defeat at the hands of rock bottom Swansea. It was expected to be a comfortable win for the in-form visitors who had just beaten the league leaders Manchester City to hand them their first league defeat this season. However, this was typical Liverpool as they have always had this habit of losing an easy game after a huge win. The only goal of the game came in the 40th minute through Alfie Mawson after a bad clearance from Van Dijk found the feet of the Swansea defender who slotted the ball home, giving his team a crucial win in their relegation battle.
As for Salah, he had a decent game and came close on a couple of occasions. In the 30th minute, he received a long ball from Van Dijk but he mishit his shot as it went high while in the 60th minute Fabianski denied him with a brilliant save after Salah's free kick was destined to hit the back of the net.
Morsi
Salah was once again devastating when given space and troubled the Swansea defence over and again throughout the 90 minutes but it just didn't happen for him as his team had to settle for their first league defeat after 15 unbeaten games and their first defeat after 18 unbeaten games in all competitions.
While Salah had a rare off day, another Egyptian had a rare good day as he finally played a league game for his team after a long absence. Mohamed Al-Nenni was that man, making the most of his rare appearance as Arsenal defeated league strugglers Crystal Palace 4-1 at home. Al-Nenni played a magnificent game in the middle of the park and seemed at home despite not playing a league game in a very long time. He was calm, composed and defended well against a great counter attacking team with so much pace. The Egyptian midfielder will hope his performance will encourage Arsene Wenger to play him more in the coming games.
Still in the Premier League, Egyptian Ahmed Hegazi continued his magnificent form for strugglers West Brom as they managed to collect a vital point from their away game against Everton as the game ended in a 1-1 draw. Hegazi's teammate Jay Rodriguez gave the visitors the lead in the seventh minute but Everton battled hard in the second half and managed to equalise in the 70th minute after their substitute Niasse slotted the ball home after being set up by Theo Walcott who was making his debut for the home side. Hegazi was as usual rock solid at the back and didn't give Tosun a sniff at goal despite being injured all week and had one training session only prior to the game. Unfortunately for Hegazi and West Brom, Swansea's win over Salah's Liverpool meant that both West Brom and Swansea are on 20 points each, occupying 19th and 20th places respectively.
Hegazi
On the other hand, Ramadan Sobhi's Stoke City managed to do what they had to as they defeated Huddersfield 2-0 to move out of the relegation zone and move to 17th place with 23 points. Ramadan came on for the last two minutes in Paul Lambert's first game as Stoke City's new manager after the club decided to sack Mark Hughes last week after a disastrous run.
Still in England, in the First Division, Ahmed Al-Mohamadi played yet another full game as Aston Villa took another step closer to returning to the Premier League after they defeated Barnsley 3-1 to move up to fourth place with 50 points, only three points off second place that secures automatic promotion to the Premier League. Al-Mohamadi played a brilliant game on the right flank and set up the first goal with a delightful cross to Scott Hogan who tapped it in from inside the six yards. Apart from his splendid assist, the Egyptian fullback played a very good game both offensively and defensively as he continued his amazing run of form since returning to the team six games ago after being benched for a short period.
Sam Morsi, our Egyptian midfielder, played a game to remember for Wigan as he captained his side to a 3-1 win over Bournemouth in the FA Cup and got on the score sheet as he scored the opener to kick-start the battle. After the game, Morsi admitted that this was one of the proudest nights of his career as he captained his side to a huge win over a Premier League team and even managed to get on the score sheet which is unusual for him, given that he's a defensive midfielder.
Al-Nenni
Leaving England and moving to Turkey, Trezeguet played the full game as his side Kasimpasa managed to collect a crucial and thrilling three points from their game against Alanyaspor thanks to Diagne who scored the winner two minutes from time to give his side a 3-2 win over their opponents. Trezeguet did not manage to score or assist in the game but was influential once again and played a very good game as his side moved up to 11th place with 22 points.
