TWO Egyptian shooters have qualified for the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) scheduled to be held in Buenos Aires in 2018. Abdullah Abdel-Moneim and Farida Darwish earned the two slots according to their results at the African Championships held in Cairo last month. Abdel-Moneim qualified for the 10m air pistol while Darwish qualified for the women's 10m air rifle. In addition to the two Egyptians, South Africa's Adriaan De Beer qualified for the men's 10m air rifle while Tunisia's Doua Chalghoun qualified for the women's 10m air pistol.
Africa has four quotas at the YOG.
The 13th edition of the African Championship took place in Cairo from 19 April to 3 May. More than 150 athletes participated, representing 21 National Olympic Committees and piling up 222 starts.
Along with the continental titles, four Olympic African quotas for the upcoming Buenos Aires YOG were awarded. To be eligible YOG athletes must be born between 1 January 2000 and 31 December 2003. The 54 quotas are distributed during the continental qualifying competitions. The 50 remaining quotas will be distributed during the following competitions: 12 at the European Championship in Baku, Azerbaijan, in July 2017; 12 at the European Championship in Budapest, Hungary, in February 2018; four at the Oceania YOG Qualifying Competition in Gold Coast in Australia in October 2017; 14 at the Asian Championship in Wako City in Japan in December 2017; and eight at the ISSF World Cup in Fort Benning in the US in May 2018. Two more quotas are guaranteed for the host country, while 24 will be distributed as universality places, bringing the total of YOG quotas to 80. The third YOG edition in Buenos Aires is from 6-18 October 2018. Qualifications for the Games started on 1 April this year and will close on 31 July 2018.
