Prime Minister Ibrahim Mehleb this week visited a newly-built memorial in Sharm El-Sheikh called ‘The Icon of Peace'. The 20-metre-high memorial looks like the famous Lotus Flower of the ancient Egyptians, with a 3-D globe in the middle surrounded by wings of peace. Sharm El-Sheikh will host a major global economic conference on 13 March. “By way of the conference Egypt wants to send messages of peace and love to the world,” Mehleb said during his visit.
A crippled regime?
“Does Egypt have efficient people who can implement what legal measures are necessary for the constituencies to be divided up without it coming to out attention all of a sudden that this or that law is unconstitutional? Can we ask who benefits from these legal flaws and whether they aim to postpone the parliamentary elections — the third step on the road map — crippling the regime?”
Abbas Al-Tarabili, Al-Wafd
The state of law
“The national and legal responsibility that falls on the constitutional court and all of us besides is that we should confront any law that proves unconstitutional and work to redraft, only by doing so can we build a state governed by the law and restore discipline.”
Islam Al-Ghazouli, Al-Watan
The normal outcome
“IS did not suddenly appear today, months or even years ago. It is the normal outcome of the despotism that has reigned in the Arab states all through the last few decades. It is the legitimate child of the failure of the regimes that were in power over the last 30-40 years at least. Had there been the least degree of justice and freedom, IS or any other extremist groups including the MB would not have spread quite so much. They would have existed on the peripheries of society like their counterparts in Europe.”
Emadeddin Hussein, Al-Shorouk
Egyptian Essence: The best tourism destination
“Egypt took part in this year's ITB Berlin, the world's leading travel trade fair, sending a high-profile delegation, and was declared a 2015 cultural partner. It was also nominated for the best travel destination award. ITB Berlin was held from 4 to 8 March.” Al-Shorouk
Facebook
“God knows best, but I believe that four main issues will impose themselves on the Riyadh meetings: the situation in Yemen, the situation in Syria, the logistic support that IS receives, and the MB in Egypt.”
Nour Farahat
“Moderate Islam is the Islam of the majority in Egypt. This majority has toppled those who call themselves ‘Islamists' together with the renegade MB leaders who want to produce another copy of that fascist group. The US war against Daesh aims to contain the group in a way that serves to US interests in disbanding and weakening our countries and extending the state of creative chaos.”
