"The Performance", is an exhibition that signals the strong comeback of veteran painter Effat Hosnicurrently on display at Picassogallery.Hosni has been through a long journey from newspaper illustrations to the art world; he started his artistic career asa press illustratorin several magazines and publicationhouses with obvious distinction since his graduationin1963.He moved clarity to summing up details. He gained his fame as an artist for his very unique style blending surrealism and modernism. With his extraordinary manipulation of texture and colour, Hosni produced multi-layered compositions of mythical proportions. His painting of a horse and horseman is packed with references to folk traditions, and yet there is something of the freedom of post-revolutionary Egypt in the air, and not a small dose of anticipation. In this current exhibition, the paintings on show are called by critics 'musical fantasia' depicting Magical Realism as in the writings ofGarcía Márquez; the magical reality style is crystallized in the Egyptian Art School with the beginning of the second generation and is obvious in the works of the third generation flourished in the middle of the past century. The works produced in that period are not only inspired by the heritage but it also delve deeply into the folk reality of the people with all its rituals, magical beliefs and popular festivities. Born in 1942, he obtained his Bachelor ofArtsfrom the Faculty of Applied Arts, Helwan University in 1963. Heis a member of the Press Syndicate, Syndicate of Plastic Arts, Cairo Atelier, Al- Ghoury Artists Association. In 1974, he was appointed the artisticdirector of the famous weekly magazine Al Mossawar. Other previous exhibitions include Hope; Impressions; Women of Egypt; and Nostalgia. The exhibition runs through 24 January.
