FIRE swept through Qalaat Al-Kabash, a shantytown in Sayeda Zeinab in Cairo, leaving 1,000 people homeless. Five people were injured and nearly 260 wooden and cardboard shacks were destroyed. Preliminary reports suggest the fire could have started following a gas cylinder explosion or an electrical short-circuit. Forty-five fire engines took four hours to extinguish the blaze. Residents who lost their homes have been promised temporary housing by the government.
