Each doll has its own distinct meaning and purpose, and is deeply connected to daily life. Japanese dolls are characterized by their serene facial expressions, which are achieved by carefully sculpting the outer layer of pulverized oyster shell which covers the dolls' faces. Dolls are also characterized by their beautiful colours reflecting the richness of ancient costumes and pageantry. All new work produced over the past two years, these collages, found objects and sculptures combine to create one impressionistic story of the recent past (1 December-8 January). *First Floor gallery "Social Security", features Yazaan Al-Zo'bi and Islam Shabana, Moshtarak, Obada, WAGBA curated by: Ania Szremski and Shehab Awad; these artists and culture workers will present public programs to build grassroots support, raise money, and exchange services and goods through networks that bypass traditional channels of fundraising. They are joined in the space by WAGBA (formerly known as Wednesday Wagbas), Townhouse's community-funded micro-granting programme that was launched in 2011. Weekly meals accompanied by artist talks and discussions will be served in the First Floor for a donation which will go into a general fund to support the artists (1 December-8 January). *Rawabet Annex "Freedom is Coming", shown in Egypt for the first time on the occasion of Townhouse's 15 year celebrations, El Horeya Gayya Labod (Freedom is Coming, 2013) is a larger-than-life sized leather and iron sculpture modeled on a French 17th-century chastity belt created by Lara Baladi. Large enough to engulf a human being, the sculpture functions almost like a cage—a prison made of iron, a substance that is obdurate and resistant to change, ultimately signifying the looming danger of the loss of freedom at large (1 December-8 January).
