Advantage Ismaili
Published in Al-Ahram Weekly on 10 - 05 - 2007

A valuable win against WAC Morocco abroad gives Ismaili the clear advantage in the return encounter in the African Confederation Cup, writes Abeer Anwar
In a rare away win by an Egyptian side, Ismaili beat WAC of Morocco 1-0 in the Confederation Cup's first-leg, fourth round fixtures in Casablanca on Sunday.
After their early exit from the Champions league, WAC were eager to find success in the Confederation Cup but Ismaili had other ideas. A first half goal by Omar Gamal in the 13th minute was all Ismaili would need.
"We will be able to add more in the second leg match in Ismailia after two weeks," French coach Patrice Neveu said following the game. "We have learnt from the Buffaloes game, and tried to get a convincing result to make the return encounter easier. We concentrated on this from the first minute."
In the previous round, Zambia's Green Buffaloes were edged in Ismailia 2-1 and tied 1- 1 in Lusaka.
WAC coach Ifeanyi Onyedika was shocked by the result. "I can't believe it. We were better but we will fight hard in the next match to make up for the loss. It is a bad situation but what can I do? I will draft some players into other positions to make up for our defeat."
The second leg matches are scheduled for 18-20 May.
In other results, Young Africans of Tanzania fought out a goalless draw with the visiting Al-Merreikh from Sudan. Hosts Young Africans dominated the game as they were cheered on by a capacity crowd, after the club's financier Yusuph Manji paid $100,000 to ensure fans could see the game free of charge.
It was also a tight game in the Nigerian derby as Nasarawa United drew 1-1 with visiting Kwara United. Kwara opened the scoring in just the 3rd minute through Chukwuma Akabueze before Emma Onu equalised for Nasarawa.
In Cameroon, Cotonsport came from behind to beat last year's Champions League runners-up CS Sfaxien of Tunisia 2-1.
TP Mazembe of the DR Congo beat Zimbabwe's Mwana Africa 1-0 in Kinshasa. The only goal of the game came in the 25th minute through Mputu Mabi.
South African champions Mamelodi Sundowns came from a goal behind to beat visiting Gafsa of Tunisia 2-1.
Etoile Fi Lante of Burkina Faso will play Astres Douala of Cameroon on 12 May.
