Once again the gifted artist Abdel-Moneim Moawad impresses his fans with a new exhibition at the Gezira Art Centre's Ahmed Sabri and Al-Hussein Fawzi Halls. Entitled “Two in One”, the exhibition showcases a collection of paintings named Islamiat at Ahmed Sabri Hall while at Al-Hussein Fawzi Hall, it presents abstract works. He is a professor at the decoration section at the Faculty of Applied Arts, Helwan University. More than anything it's the surfaces of Moawad's paintings, intricately alive with his Islamic decorations and motifs, that contribute to the sense that the paintings are stained glass. This is in addition to mastering the abstract style; it is his daring, bright palette that both attracts and repels. In these works Moawad continues to use the charm of the Islamic symbols with his archive of Pharaonic styles to create complex forms with exquisite meticulous details. By dislocating and re-presenting colours and lines in a very condensed manner, Moawad urges the viewer to reconsider the language of colours in relation to its social surroundings and different cultural interpretations. The exhibition is on until 7 November.
