EGYPTIAN athletes in the 2013 Mediterranean Games set a record for the country in the 10-day tournament that took place in Mersin, Turkey from 20 to 30 June. The Egyptians collected a total of 67 medals -- 21 gold, 22 silver and 24 bronze. The result put Egypt fifth behind Italy, the host nation Turkey, France and Spain. It was the best achievement for Egypt since the championship began in 1951. Egypt won a medal in almost every sport it took part in. Weightlifting was the winningest sport with 26 medals -- 10 gold, 9 silver and 7 bronze. Karate was second best with an overall 8 medals; 2 gold, 3 silver and 3 bronze. Wrestling followed with a total of 11 medals; 1 gold, 4 silver and 6 bronze. Athletics claimed 5 medals; 1 gold, 3 silver and 1 bronze. Taekwondo snatched two medals, a gold and a bronze. Table tennis, gymnastics, handball, judo, archery and swimming each won a gold medal. Boxing claimed 5 medals; 2 silver and 3 bronze, and fencing also two a silver and a bronze. Finally there was a bronze in rowing. Unfortunately, the champions were a bit disappointed as their achievements went largely unnoticed with the Egyptians focusing mainly on the ongoing tense political situation. The Mediterranean Games is held every four years among the countries of the Mediterranean Basin. It is held with the aim of contributing to the social and cultural rapprochement among the citizens of the Mediterranean countries. The Games are based on the rules of the Olympic Games, and the competitions are completed within a period not exceeding 13 days.
