TheKhanalmaghrabygallery, Zamalek, founded by Salwa Al-Maghrabi, decided to end the crucial and long role it played in promoting art and introducing budding talents to the Egyptian art scene during the past years through a thrilling group exhibition. Entitled, "Swan Song", the exhibition is the last show organized by the gallery before its complete closure. It showcases masterpieces by late painters such as Salah Taher, Tahiya Halimand Samir Rafaaas well as works by present ones including among others George Bahgory, Al-Dessouki Fahmi, Reem Abdel-Wahab, Hassan Abdel-Fattah, Hend Adnan, Galal Al-Husseiny, Randa Fahmi, Shaker Al-Idrissiand Sherine Mustafa.
Born in 1932 in Luxor, internationally acclaimed artist Bahgory graduated from the Cairo Faculty of Fine Arts, Helwan University and the Faculty of Fine Arts in Paris. Since 1953 and until 1975, he was a cartoonist at Rose Al-Youssef and Sabah Al-Kheir magazines. Based in Paris, Bahgory is very diligent in showing his masterpieces in Egypt's various art galleries and in participating at numerous collective shows. He held several exhibitions in Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, Tunisia, Finland, Germany, the United States and France and received the first international caricature prize in Rome in 1985 and 1987. His art pieces are critically acclaimed and many critics see that the eye in Bahgory's signature symbolizes Horus, the sun god in the ancient Egyptian mythology. As a cartoonist, he occupies a very prestigious place among political cartoonists in the Arab world. He obtained several international awards from France and Spain and gained his reputation in Paris as Egypt's Picasso. The painting in the picture is an acrylic on canvas created by Bahgory.
The exhibition is running through 3 July.
