Entre Nous: Stepping out in style
Published in Al-Ahram Weekly on 16 - 04 - 2013

A new season brings with it many things, not the least important of which is the opportunity for a major shoe closet update. Shoe trends for this season are all about pointed toes, metallic finishes, transparent details and architectural shapes. Sexy 1990s pointy heels are back and have been modernised with everything from dainty ankle straps to cylindrical heels.
Summer 2013 brings to shoes colourful hues combined with pastel colours. Blue stands out, combined with white or off-white, neon and the metallics: gold, silver, copper, silver foil and metallic colours, such as blue, green and pink. A diversity of materials feature prominently, amongst those the heels of wood and cork rope, as well as plastic.
Sneakers, strappy flat sandals and slippers have a strong foothold in a manner of speaking. Nautical motifs, studs, spikes, stripes, glitter and tropical prints are among the key elements highlighted. The glitter, however, remains high and stands out amid stones and rhinestones, sparkling with interesting optical effects. The embroideries and prints bring in floral motifs, in addition to ethnic, nautical and geometric patterns. Shoes with eye-catching heels are in for the season. Crushed crystals and metallic leaf plates are used in decorating sandals and heeled sandals.
Clear heels and straps are back this summer as well, in either wedged sandals with clear platforms or wedged boots with a clear outer lining.
