It was a narrow win for Zamalek. The five-time African champions managed a lone goal over DR Congo side AS Vita Club in their 1/16th round Orange CAF Champions League first leg encounter on Friday in Alexandria. It was late in the match when Ahmed Gaafar opened the scoring for his team, the winning goal coming in the 67th minute. According to cafonline, the visiting team, winners of the premier continental club championship 40 years ago, gave their hosts much to worry about in the second leg with a performance that keeps them in contention. The Conogolese were denied a goal on 11 minutes after Nzinga Luvumbu's effort ricocheted off the crossbar. Zamalek were in control for most part of the game and deservingly went up later in the second half, with Sabri Rahil weaving his way past the Congolese defence before squaring to Gaafar, who fired in, leaving goalkeeper Nelson Lukong with no option. In other matches in the Zamalek group, in the Algeria port city of Bejaia, Ghana champions Kumasi Asante Kotoko held JSM Bejaia to a barren draw. Despite playing at home, the Kenyan champions Tusker yielded 2-1 to African champions Ahli in the first leg, first round match of the CAF Champions League at Nyayo Stadium on Saturday. The result means that the Brewers must win the return match by two clear goals to be assured of making it to the next round when the two sides clash again in two weeks. Ahli's two goals were scored by substitute Ahmed Shokri in the 48th and 56th minute respectively. Both goals were assisted by Ahli's superstar Mohamed Barakat. The home team Tusker were able to score its first goal by Jesse Were in the 59th minute after he headed home a Robert Omunik cross. The second leg matches will take place on the weekend of 5-7 April. In the CAF Confederations Cup, Enppi of Egypt beat Gor Mahia of Kenya 3-0 while Ismaili registered its second victory of this event, beating Terreble C.O 2-0. On Tuesday, the Egyptian U-20 team was scheduled to meet the host nation Algeria in an all-North African affair on day 2 at the 2013 Orange CAF U-20 Championship, while Ghana was scheduled to take on Benin on the same day. The young Pharaohs edged Ghana 2-1 in their opener earlier in the week as both sides kicked off their debuts in the competition in Ain Timouchent, Algeria, on Saturday. Second half goals from substitute Mahmoud Hamad and Saleh Gomaa from the spot gave the Pharaohs the maximum points, while 19-year-old Assifuah scored for the Black Satellites. Up until Tuesday, Egypt was leading Group A with three points, two more than Algeria and Benin who played a goalless draw in the first match earlier in the day. A fruitless first half that ended in a goalless draw was substituted by a completely different second half. Ghana started on an attacking note and Egyptian keeper Awad saved three well crafted chances in the first 10 minutes from Assifuah and Francis Narh who should have put Ghana ahead. After 67 minutes and against the run of play, substitute Mahmoud Hamad scored from what literally was his first touch to head home Rami Rabeaa's cross and give Egypt the lead. The goal gave the young Egyptians confidence and Koka could have made it 2-0 but his header missed the goal. It was Assifuah who got Ghana the equaliser, capitalising on a defensive blunder from Egypt's Yasser Ibrahim after 76 minutes. And just as both teams seemed satisfied with the draw, substitute Mahmoud Abdel-Minaem, better known as Kahraba (Electricity), went one-on-one with Ghana goalkeeper Antoy who fouled him inside the area. From the resulting penalty Saleh Gomaa stepped up to score and put Egypt ahead two minutes from time.
