Entitled “Women of New Egypt”, the 2013 EU Delegation's Fifth Photography Competition included the contributions of 30 amateur photographers who were selected by an independent jury comprising public relations pioneer Loula Zaklama, international photographer Sherif Sonbol, social development expert and UN advisor Iman Bibars, ambassador of art to Egypt photographer Coucla Refaat and art student Stephanie Moran. “As their work attests, they have captured the essence of contemporary Egyptian women in terms of their achievements, happiness and struggle. I was impressed by the power of hope, solidarity and unity that are reflected in these images,” said head of the EU Delegation to Egypt James Moran. This year, the first Euro 1,000 prize went to gifted photographer Ahmed Hamed Ahmed and the runner up was awarded a digital SLR camera. A third prize of Euro 500 was added, following the recommendation of the jury members. A special mention by the jury has also been established for the best photojournalistic effort, in memory of the young photographer Mohamed Hassan, winner of the first EU photography competition
