On Thursday 1 May, Palestinian band Turab will perform at El-Genaina Theatre, opening the Red Zone Festival in Cairo -- part of this year's Spring Festival
Published in Ahram Online on 27 - 04 - 2014

Turab, a group of Palestinian musicians, will perform at El-Genaina Theatre on Thursday 1 May, as part of Culture Resource's Spring Festival (running between 24 April and 26 May).
The concert is also the first event in the Red Zone Festival. Launched in Oslo in 2013, its second edition -- which runs between 1 and 15 May -- extends to Cairo and Beirut. In Egypt it is hosted by the Culture Resource and fuses into the Spring Festival.
The Red Zone Festival covers many artistic disciplines including music, literature, visual arts, theatre, and dance from around the world, and according to its organisers, the event is dedicated to freedom of expression in the arts and supporting this freedom through giving artists access to broad audiences.
Established in 2004 by Basel Zayed, Turab (meaning in Arabic: soil) consists of young Palestinian musicians from diverse backgrounds who, according to the programme notes, "Seek to develop a contemporary Palestinian musical tradition. Through instrumental pieces and songs, Turab uses music to address the complexities of politics, love, social justice, and daily life under occupation in Palestine, drawing on a distinguished tradition of politically and socially engaged music and songs, yet maintaining a unique identity."
Turab have released three albums:This is the Night (2006), Adam (2010) and Jerusalem (2011).
Programme:
Thursday 1 May at 8pm
El-Genaina Theatre, Al-Azhar Park, Salah Salem Road, Darassa
