CAF orders Ahly, Zamalek to play CL games at Cairo Stadium Decision comes after both Egyptian sides failed to select another venue within CAF's given time limit
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has informed Zamalek and Ahly that their coming games in the Champions League will be played at Cairo Stadium after the two Egyptian sides ran out of time in choosing another host venue, Zamalek's official website announced on Thursday. Ahly are scheduled to face Libya's Ahly Benghazi in the second leg of the CAF Champions League round of 16 on Saturday, while Zamalek will face Zambian side Nkana on Sunday. A statement on Zamelek's website said that the side had received an official letter from the Egyptian Football Association (EFA), sent from CAF, confirming that both Egyptian teams had exceeded the given time limit to announce a venue for their upcoming Champions League matches. Cairo Stadium has been chosen, the statement said, as it is the registered venue for the teams. Ahly and Zamalek will be withdrawn from the African tournament if they don't arrange their affairs as soon as possible, the statement concluded. Ahly and Zamalek both submitted official requests for their Champions League round of 16 return legs to be played in Cairo, but Egypt's interior ministry refused the requests and ordered the two sides to play their games at Gouna Stadium. Authorities have been reluctant to stage continental fixtures in Cairo after altercations between Ultras fans and police last month. Ahly lost 1-0 to Benghazi in the first leg in Tunisia, while Zamalek played out a goalless draw with Nkana in Zambia.
