Zesco coach eager to break Zambian jinx against Ahly Three weeks ahead of their African Champions League match, Zambia's Zesco coach begins a war of announcements with Egyptian club Ahly
Zambia's Zesco United manager Fighton Simukonda affirmed his confidence in overcoming Egyptian giants Ahly win they host them in the first-leg of round 16 in the African Champion League on 23 April. “We want to break the jinx of losing to North African teams. Al Ahly should be eliminated," Simukonda was quoted as saying in Zambian newspaper The Post. Zambian clubs failed to eliminate Egyptian teams since entering the CAF continental club competitions in 1972. It won't be an easy test for Zesco United against the six-time African champions. "It will be tough but we will capitalise on playing at home by winning big," the former Nkana defender added. After returning back to Egypt from South Africa, Ahly coach Portuguese Manuel Jose is worried, not about Zesco's match, but about the future of Egyptian domestic football bearing in mind the current unrest and Saturday's events when Zamalek supporters invaded Cairo stadium during their side and Club Africain's Champions League match on Saturday. Zesco United qualified for round 16 after defeating Young Buffaloes on Saturday evening in Manzini 7-0 winning on aggregate while Al-Ahly eliminated SuperSport United of South Africa despite losing 1-0 on the same evening away in Polokwane finishing 2-1 on aggregate.
