Art Alert: Youssra El-Hawary to perform at Rawabet Theatre Accordionist, singer and radio presenter Youssra El-Hawary to perform at Rawabet Theatre this weekend
Popular accordionist and singer Youssra El-Hawary will hold a concert at Rawabet Theatre on Saturday 29 March at 8:30pm. The musician and her band will perform tracks such as El-Soor, Dabdoub, Hato Keteer and Nashaz. El-Soor (The Wall) was the song that brought local and international attention to the young musician. With lyrics originally written by Waleed Taher in 2005, El-Hawary's video -- which she made with Sara Yehia -- sets the song against the backdrop of the infamous downtown Cairo walls. The video brings new meaning to Taher's words, “A poor man stood in front of the wall and pissed on it, he who built it, he who makes it higher and he who protects it.” El-Soor won the accordionist first prize at the anti-corruption-themed Fair Play Global Music Video Competition and she was invited with her band to perform in Brazil in 2012. This year El-Soor was nominated for 'Best Activist Anthem' at the 'Honesty Oscars'. El-Hawary quickly proved that El-Soor was not a one-hit wonder. The young artist produced new songs, and performed numerous concerts and festivals. Most recently, El-Hawary began presenting a weekly radio show dubbed ‘Aadet Mazika' on Egyptian pop music station Nogoom FM, where every Tuesday evening she hosts bands or musicians from the independent scene. At the Rawabet concert, El-Hawary will be joined by Shadi El-Hosseiny on piano, Sedky Sakr on harmonica and recorder, Yamen El-Gamal on bass guitar, Hussein El-Meleigy on percussion and Mohamed Emad on mandolin. Programme: Saturday 29 March at 8:30pm at Rawabet Theatre 3 Hussein Al-Maamar Street, off Mahmoud Bassiouny Street, Talaat Harb, downtown Cairo http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/97380.aspx
