Egypt's criminal court upholds freezing the assets of Mubarak regime heavyweights Safwat El-Sherif, Zakaria Azmi and Ibrahim Soliman stand accused of illegally profiting from their top positions in the Mubarak regime
Cairo's criminal court upheld Sunday the Iliegal Gains Committee's decision to freeze the assets of Safwat El-Sherif and Zakaria Azmi, former heads of the Upper House and Hosni Mubarak's office respectively, as well as the former housing minister Ibrahim Soliman. Recent investigations confirmed that their wealths to dwarf the incomes for their posts. The court is yet to decide on the assets of former parliamentary speaker Fathi Sorour, whose wealth is still under investigation. Sorour, El-Sherif, Azmi were the inner circle of the old guard supporting ousted president Hosni Mubarak within the National Democratic Party. The trio, along with Soliman, are indicted on charges of abusing their political powers to accumulate illegal profits. The assets of the defendants' families have also been frozen.
