Semester ends early at Cairo Uni engineering faculty due to unrest Engineering faculty administrators resign and term ends early as student protests continue
The fall semester will end on Wednesday at Cairo University's engineering faculty due to ongoing protests on campus. "Exams [for undergraduates and postgraduates] will take place on time on 28 December. But students will only be tested on the curriculum they have covered," the university said. The fall semester normally ends in mid-January. The university issued a statement on Tuesday announcing the suspension of classes indefinitely due to repeated "unfortunate" events. Engineering students are angered by the death of fellow engineer Mohamed Reda, 19, who was shot dead by security forces during a pro-Morsi protest on campus in early November. They began a sit-in on Saturday to demand justice for Reda. Engineering faculty administrators submitted their resignation on Wednesday. But university president Gaber Nassar has urged them to reconsider. Sherif Shehata assistant professor at the faculty of engineering told Ahram Online that the adminstration's resignation comes in protest of the recent events. "The situation has become unbelievable; students don't feel safe on campus anymore especially after the killing of their colleague Reda," said Shehata. At least 36 people were injured during clashes on Tuesday at Cairo, Al-Azhar and Fayoum universities. http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/88841.aspx
