Sunday 8 December
Screening of film 'Asham' at Cairo Opera House, 6.30pm
Egypt's critically-acclaimed 'Asham' is the first feature film for director Magy Morgan as both writer and director, following her direction of several documentary films. 'Asham' follows various intertwining stories of different characters dealing with hope, despair and the meaning of happiness, set against the backdrop of the unfathomable city they call home: Cairo. The screening is part of the Cairo Opera House's weekly cinema club. The movie will be screened again on 11 December. Check the 11 December listings. Watch the trailer below.

Mozart's lieder and arias at the American University in Cairo, 7pm
Students from the American University in Cairo's music performance major will be joined by singers from Fabrica to perform scenes, arias and lieder from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Vocal coach and general supervisor of the evening is Neveen Allouba, guest professor Raouf Zeidan, and pianist Rosalie Caps. The performance will take place at the university's new campus and will be repeated Monday, 9 December.

Harp recital at the Manasterly Palace, 8pm
Harpist Manal Mohei Eldin will give a recital at the historic Manasterly Palace. She will perform works from Bach, Handel, Dussek, Debussy, Albeniz and Granados. Winner of the State Incentive Award for Arts 2013, Manal Mohei Eldin is a well known and accomplished Egyptian musician. As a soloist she has a countless number of recitals to her name, along with performances with many orchestras in Egypt. Read a full profile of Mohei Eldin here.

Monday 9 December
Screening of 'Coming of Age' at El-Gezira Cinema, 6.30pm
An Austrian movie about love that has no age boundaries, 'Coming of Age' is a touching story about a couple in advanced age in a society where age is segregated and marginalised. The screening is part of the Austrian Cultural Forum's weekly movie afternoons. The film will be in German with English subtitles. Watch the trailer below.

'Once Upon a Time Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow' at Artellewa, 7pm
The theatre piece '‫Once Upon a Time Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow,' directed by multidisciplinary Iranian-Egyptian artist Sabry Zekry, will be performed in cultural venues across Egypt this month. The performance, which is being supported by the Culture Resource's (Al-Mawred Al-Thakafy) Production Awards Programme, will take place at five venues in Cairo and one in Minya governorate. Mawlana performance at El-Gomhoreya Theatre, 7pm
The performance is based on a novel entitled Mawlana by Ibrahim Eissa. It will be staged by the Egyptian Modern Dance Theatre on three consecutive evenings: 10, 11 and 12 December.

Opening of exhibition 'WHY' by Nadine Hammam at ArtTalks
Zamalek's ArtTalks Gallery is hosting Nadine Hammam's fourth solo exhibition, entitled 'WHY.' The Cairo-based, multidisciplinary artist often puts social taboos and gender dynamics into question, exploring the structures pervading Middle Eastern societies in artworks produced in various media, including painting, text, sound, video, and installation. In this exhibition, Hammam takes a closer look at the word “why.” By rearranging fragments of broken mirrors on canvas to spell out words such as “love," "lust," and "forever,” the artist places the audience in her artwork. The exhibition will run through 15 January 2014.

Wednesday 11 December
ZaMaN band at Bibliotheca Alexandrina, 7pm
ZaMaN is an Egyptian band that performs original compositions fusing Oriental and classical Western music. They are strongly influenced by older musical styles, such as Blues, Old Rock and swing: hence their name ZaMaN, which translates from Arabic as "long time ago."

Last day of Gamal El-Sagini at Zamalek Art Gallery
Works by one of Egypt's most prominent sculptors, Gamal El-Sagini (1917-1977), are showcased at the Zamalek Art Gallery starting 17 November. El-Sagini pioneered a movement of expressionism in modern Egyptian sculpture. Exhibition closes 11 December.

Thursday 12 December
Opening of the exhibition 'Reference: Artists Activating the Archive' at Contemporary Image Collective (CIC)
Curated by Hala El Koussy and Uriel Orlow, "Reference: Artists Activating the Archive" presents four projects the are the final results of over a year of research and development. The projects were selected to be developed following a workshop that took place at Contemporary Image Collective (CIC) in 2012, led by El Koussy and Orlow, in which the potential of research and archiving for contemporary art was explored. The exhibition runs until 12 January 2014. Read more here

Screening of Othello at El Gezira Cinema, 7pm
1952 movie Othello, directed by and starring Orson Welles is part of weekly Thursday screenings which focus on cinema classics. The film also stars Micheál MacLiammóir, and Robert Coote. Christmas concert with young talents at the Cairo Opera House, 8pm
Students from the American University in Cairo joined by performers from Fabrica troupe will perform beloved Christmas songs. The event is hosted by soprano Neveen Allouba with Grieg Martin on piano. Guest star of the evening is Raouf Zeidan.

'Le Nouvel Orientalisme,' exhibition by Katherine Bakhoum at Safarkhan Art Gallery
French-Egyptian artist Katherine Bakhoum once again exhibits at Safarkhan, this time a collection dubbed 'Le Nouvel Orientalisme.' Bakhoum was born in Cairo in 1949, but today resides and paints in Paris. An air of nostalgia always pervades this artist's work, which is heavily influenced by Orientalist-style painting. Her canvases often capture figures with an ethereal quality. The exhibition opened 2 December and runs until 28 December.

Saturday 14 December
Cairo Symphony Orchestra at the Cairo Opera House, 8pm
The weekly concert of the Cairo Symphony Orchestra will include the following programme: Gamal Abdel Rahim's Introduction and Rondo Baladi, Prokofiev's Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No 3 in C Major, Rachmaninov's Symphonic Poem "The Isle of Dead" and Tchaikovsky's Polonaise from Eugene Onegin, Op 24. The conductor of the evening is Nader Abbassi and piano soloist Mohamed Shams.

Sunday 15 December
Last day of Brain Damage: Collective exhibition at Darb 1718
A collective exhibition entitled Brain Damage opened 16 November at the Darb 1718 Contemporary Art and Culture Centre. The show features artwork by a group of emerging artists (Amro Okacha, Fady Galal, Fajr Soliman, Ghadir Wagdy, Haytham Sherif, Maghraffiti, Mohamed Khaled, and Razan Saeed) working under the umbrella of Wust El-Balad Studio, an art incubator born after the January 25 Revolution to support young artists. Exhibition closes 15 December.
