Cairo Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Kristian Alexander, will perform works by Maurice Ravel, Jacques Ibert and César Franck on Saturday 16 November at Cairo Opera House
Published in Ahram Online on 10 - 11 - 2013

The weekly concert of the Cairo Symphony Orchestra will take place on Saturday 16 November at the main hall of the Cairo Opera House.
The programme will include Maurice Ravel's Le Tombeau de Couperin, Jacques Ibert's Concerto for Flute and Orchestra (1934), and César Franck's Symphony in D Minor.
Born in 1974, Peter Olah from Hungary will be the flute soloist of the evening.
Olah has been a principal flute player with the Cairo Symphony Orchestra since 2005. He graduated at the Music Academy in Budapest and continued his studies at the Music University in Graz (Austria), and the Hochschule für Musik in Munich (Germany). He is a student of the internationally acclaimed concert flutist Andras Adorjan. Most recently, Olah won first prize during the Alexander and Buono International Flute Competition in New York, playing at the Carnegie Hall on 20 October 2013.
Jacques Ibert's Concerto for Flute and Orchestra (1934) is considered one of the most technically challenigng flute concertos for a soloist. It is also one of the most beloved among audiences and is frequently performed in international concert halls. One critic described the work as, "full of humour, virtuosity and intense technical challenges for the soloist; characteristic of Ibert's eclectic, versatile compositional style."
The Cairo Symphony Orchestra will be conducted by Kristian Alexander, a Canadian conductor, music director, and philanthropist. Alexander is the founding director of various music institutions and initiatives, such as the International Music Academy, the Markham Contemporary Music Festival and the International Music Competition in Toronto. His resume includes conducting several international orchestras: The Windsor Symphony Orchestra, the Metropolitan Orchestra, the Oakville Chamber Orchestra, the Internationale Bach-Collegium and Gächinger Kantorei (Stuttgart, Germany), the “Mozarteum” Symphony Orchestra (Sofia, Bulgaria), among others.
