VIDEO: Zamalek ease up to revived Egypt Cup quarterfinals Egyptian football brought back to life as Zamalek trashes Tanta in Egypt Cup's round of 16 after a four-month suspension
Zamalek restarted their bid for their 21st Egypt Cup with a 4-0 win over second division outfit Tanta in round of 16 at Hurghada's Gouna stadium Tuesday. Zamalek dominated the entire game, with Ahmed Eid opening the scoring in the 20th minute, nine minutes before Hazem Emam hit the second goal. In the second half, Ahmed Gaafar scored in the 60th minute, and Ahmed Ali completed the rout 18 minutes before time. The tournament was brought back to life after a four-month halt due to security concerns following the ouster of president Mohamed Morsi by the military amid mass protests. Egyptian football competitions were first frozen in February 2012 after 72 Ahly fans died in Port Said stadium following clashes with rival Masry fans. The Premier League season was cancelled once again during the violence that followed the 30 June anti-Morsi protests. The Whites last won the Cup title in 2008, after which Haras El-Hodoud clinched it twice and ENPPI topped the last tournament in 2011/2012. Zamalek rival Ahly, who hold a record of 33 Cups, have skipped the 2012/2013 competition due to financial sponsorship issues. The Whites, who eliminated Tersana in round of 32 after a 3-0 win, will be competing with army team El-Entag El-Harby in the quarterfinals Sunday. Round of 16 matches will finish on Wednesday, with Ismaily and Canal facing off for a spot in the last eight against Al-Nasr Monday.
