Clashes between Egyptian security forces and protesters in Mohandiseen
Teargas fired in the west Cairo neighbourhood of Mohandiseen as pro-Morsi protesters face off against security
Published in Ahram Online on 30 - 08 - 2013

Clashes erupted between security forces and protesters supporting ousted president Mohamed Morsi inGamaatAl-DowalStreet in the Cairo suburb of Mohandiseen on Friday afternoon.
Army soldiers and police forces fired warning shots and teargas grenades to stop the advance of a protest towards Mostafa Mahmoud Square on Gamaat Al-Dowal Street. The square is a common location for protests.
The protesters carried yellow posters showing a hand holding up four fingers, a symbol that invokes the Rabaa Al-Adawiya pro-Morsi protest which was violently dispersed by security forces on 14 August. Some also carried pictures of the deposed president.
The demonstrators had been joined by members of Salafist-leaningAhrar movement.
Unlike the pro-Morsi supporters, the Ahrar movement youth held banners attacking both the Muslim Brotherhood, from which Morsi hails, and the military, as well the Mubarak regime remnants.
On its Facebook page, the Ahrar movement announced that it had planned for its rally to gather at Sphinx Square, a square several hundred metres away from Mostafa Mahmoud.
The movement claimed on its Twitter account that two of its members had been killed in clashes near Lebanon Square, also in Mohandiseen, so far on Friday.
Earlier on Friday, the security forces dispersed a small pro-Morsi protest in Sphinx Square.
Other areas in Cairo also saw large protesters, with thousands of protesters gathered at the presidential palace in Heliopolis chanting against "the military coup" and General Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.
Heliopolis also saw a rally of cars bearing the same yellow Rabaa posters, while a group of pro-Morsi protesters drew offensive graffiti on the walls of a building close to the embassy of the United Arab Emirates, comparing the UAE to Israel.
The UAE has been a strong backer of the military-led ouster of Mohamed Morsi in July.
According to the Twitter account of satellite channel Al Jazeera Mubashar Misr, pro-Morsi rallies in Cairo are scheduled to head to the presidential palace, while all rallies in Giza will head to Sphinx Square.
